Jack London The Call of the Wild and White Fang (Illustrated by Philip R. Goodwin and Charles Livingston Bull)

American author, journalist, and social activist Jack London is best known for his stories set during the Klondike gold rush. Drawing upon his own personal experiences in the Klondike, London’s stories are embodied with a realism indicative of that experience. This volume brings together two of his most famous novellas, “The Call of the Wild” and “White Fang”. “The Call of the Wild” follows the struggle of Buck, a domesticated dog, who is snatched from a pastoral ranch in California and is sold into a brutal life as a sled dog in the Yukon. “White Fang”, described as a mirror to “The Call of the Wild”, conversely details a wild wolfdog’s journey to domestication. By telling these stories through the viewpoint of the animals London explores the struggle of humankind between its wild nature and the demands of civilization. “The Call of the Wild” and “White Fang” are two of the finest examples of London’s literary talent and exhibit why he would become one of the most popular writers of his day. This edition is illustrated by Philip R. Goodwin and Charles Livingston Bull. This edition includes a biographical afterword.

Jack London White Fang

"White Fang" is an adventure story of the great Northwestern Canadian frontier. It the type of story for which Jack London is most well known. White Fang, who is the son of Kiche and One Eye, is born in the wild but comes to live among man in an Indian camp as a cub. White Fang who is essentially a wild animal must learn to live among man as a domesticated animal. The novel deals with the theme of both a domesticated animal learning to live in the wild as well as a wild animal learning to live in a domesticated capacity among humans. It is a novel about the relationship between animal and man and the differences in the wild instincts of wolves versus the tendencies towards domestication that are more common among dogs. Above all «White Fang» is a story of great wilderness adventure.

You have to go after it with a club.', 'I would rather be a superb meteor, every atom of me in magnificent glow, than a sleepy and permanent planet.', and 'I'd rather sing one wild song and burst my heart with it, than live a thousand years watching my digestion and being afraid of the wet.'

London Jack The Call of the Wild and White Fang

The Call of the Wild (1903) and White Fang (1906) are world famous animal stories. Set in Alaska during the Klondike Gold Rush of the late 1890s, The Call of the Wild is about Buck, the magnificent cross-bred offspring of a St Bernard and a Scottish Collie. Stolen from his pampered life on a Californian estate and shipped to the Klondike to work as a sledge dog, he triumphs over his circumstances and becomes the leader of a wolf pack. The story records the 'decivilisation' of Buck as he answers 'the call of the wild', an inherent memory of primeval origins to which he instinctively responds. In contrast. White Fang relates the tale of a wolf born and bred in the wild which is civilised bv the master he comes to trust and love. The brutal world of the Klondike miners and their dogs is brilliantly evoked and Jack London's rendering of the sentient life of Buck and White Fang as they confront their destiny is enthralling and convincing. The deeper resonance of these stories derives from the authors use of the myth of the hero who survives by strength and courage, a powerful myth that still appeals to our collective unconscious. Jack London The Call of the Wild

"The Call of the Wild" is considered to be one Jack London's greatest novels. During the Yukon Gold Rush of the late 19th century London traveled there to strike it rich. While he didn't find any gold he came away with the experiences that would inspire some of his greatest writing. «The Call of the Wild», one of the greatest examples of this inspiration, is an exciting tale of adventure set in the great frozen north of the Yukon wilderness.

From White Fang to The Iron Heel, The Call of the Wild to The People of the Abyss, London's novels are intense and atmospheric, and deserve their standing and reputation as some of the most exciting adventure stories ever put to paper. Jack London was highly qualified to be one of the 20th century's greatest writers of adventure stories, for he was one of its greatest adventurers. He was, to name but a few of his many occupations, an oyster pirate, government patrolman, seal hunter, gold prospector, war correspondent, landowner and tramp. From his vast and varied life experiences he drew inspiration for over fifty books in a literary career spanning only seventeen years. His work is remarkable, vivid and exciting, much like the author himself. From The Call of the Wild and White Fang, which rank as two of the best dog stories ever written, to the sea-based The Sea-Wolf and the social critiques of The People of the Abyss and The Iron Heel, Jack London's variety of work, not to mention the sheer quality, place him at the forefront of 20th century classic fiction.

Джек Лондон White Fang

White Fang is a novel by American author Jack London (1876–1916) – and the name of the book's eponymous character, a wild wolfdog. First serialized in Outing magazine, it was published in 1906. The story details White Fang's journey to domestication in Yukon Territory and the Northwest Territories during the 1890s Klondike Gold Rush. It is a companion novel (and a thematic mirror) to London's best-known work, The Call of the Wild, which is about a kidnapped, domesticated dog embracing his wild ancestry to survive and thrive in the wild. Much of White Fang is written from the viewpoint of the titular canine character, enabling London to explore how animals view their world and how they view humans. White Fang examines the violent world of wild animals and the equally violent world of humans. The book also explores complex themes including morality and redemption. As early as 1925, the story was adapted to film, and it has since seen several more cinematic adaptations. The story begins before the wolf-dog hybrid is born, with two men and their sled dog team on a journey to deliver the coffin of Lord Alfred to a remote town named Fort McGurry in the higher area of the Yukon Territory. The men, Bill and Henry, are stalked by a large pack of starving wolves over the course of several days. Finally, after all of their dogs and Bill have been eaten, four more teams find Henry trying to escape from the wolves; the wolf pack scatters when they hear the large group of people coming… Famous works of the author Jack London: «„The Cruise of the Dazzler“», «„A Daughter of the Snows“», «„The Call of the Wild“», «„The Kempton-Wace Letters“», «„The Sea-Wolf“», «„The Game“», «„White Fang“», «„The Iron Heel“», «„Martin Eden“», «„Burning Daylight“», «„A Son of the Sun“», «„The Abysmal Brute“», «„The Valley of the Moon“», «„The Mutiny of the Elsinore“», «„The Star Rover“», «„The Little Lady of the Big House“» and many more.
